Constructing the Future – Malcolm’s Journey of Transformation

Given a second chance, Malcolm has found purpose and stability through hands-on work, support from Bounce Back, and his own determination to change.

Malcolm was first referred to Bounce Back through the Peckham Job Centre, looking for direction and an opportunity to build a better future for himself. Originally from Belgium and now living in Peckham, Malcolm was facing a number of challenges. He struggled with anxiety and depression and had been using cannabis in the past, but he made a clear decision to turn his life around. Staying with and helping care for his father, Malcolm showed early signs of reliability and compassion, assisting with day-to-day tasks at home.

Despite not completing his school exams and having no formal qualifications, Malcolm came to Bounce Back with a desire to learn and a willingness to work. He had previous experience as a kitchen porter, but wanted to explore other paths, particularly in the creative and practical fields.

From the outset, our staff member Lorna worked closely with Malcolm, conducting a skills assessment to explore his interests, strengths, and career ambitions. Through these conversations, Malcolm’s enthusiasm for the creative arts became clear – particularly in theatre design, painting, and decorating. He even spoke proudly about helping to build a set at Excel Exhibition Centre, an experience that ignited his passion for hands-on, creative work.

Initially, Malcolm was supposed to attend a barista course, but after further discussion with Lorna, it became evident that he was more suited to a trade-based route. In May, he began our painting and decorating course and showed real commitment and talent throughout. By July, he had successfully completed his CSCS card training, a key qualification for working on construction sites.

“Malcolm is a humble individual with a strong eagerness to learn. He’s an absolute pleasure to work with and a great example to others,” says Lorna McNish, who supported Malcolm throughout his journey.

Malcolm is now job-ready – equipped with practical skills, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose. At every step, Lorna ensured Malcolm was involved in decision-making, always checking in to see if opportunities matched his interests and goals. This person-centred approach made a big difference, empowering Malcolm to take ownership of his journey.

We are thrilled to share that Malcolm is now employed as a Demolition Operative, having started work on 21st August. This role marks a significant milestone in his journey – moving from uncertainty and instability to secure, full-time employment in a sector where he can continue to grow and develop.

Malcolm’s story is a testament to what’s possible when someone is given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities. From struggling with mental health and uncertainty about the future, to now being trained, qualified, and employed, Malcolm embodies the resilience and determination that Bounce Back aims to nurture in every individual.

We are incredibly proud of how far Malcolm has come and excited to see where his future takes him next.
